President’s Appeal – Birthing in the Pacific

SIST was lucky to host Soroptimist International President Alice Wells at our club’s Dec 8th meeting to discuss this year’s President’s Appeal Project.  The club raised funds to adopt 2 midwives in Papau New Guinnea and save hundreds of lives!

The 2011 President’s Appeal project, Birthing in the Pacific, targets the United Nations Millennium Development Goal 5: to improve maternal health.  The focus of President’s Appeal is in Papua New Guinea which has the 2nd worst maternal and infant mortality rate in Asia.  One of the biggest killers of children under five worldwide is the lack of skilled birth attendants.

Each day, 1,000 women die due to complications from pregnancy and childbirth – that equates to 41 women per hour.  Only 28 out of 100 women giving birth have a trained health attendant in developing countries.  More than 90% of maternal deaths occur in Africa and Asia where women die from severe bleeding, infections, and obstructed labor.

The initial focus of this project will be up-skilling and professionally developing midwives as a way of reducing the very high rate of infant and maternal mortality in Papua New Guinea.  Both training and supplies will be part of this project for nurses, midwives, community health workers and village birth attendants.  Clubs and members can “Adopt a Midwife” for $300 to provide important training, helping midwives save the lives of women giving birth.
